Early Pioneers in
Albury

In the mid 1830s, John Batman
& John Pascoe Fawkner founded
Melbourne. They then decided
to go further north, and discovered
a  small settlement.  This settlement became
the town of Albury!
Cemetery
The first Albury Pioneer Cemetery was in south Albury.
It was divided into twelve sections.  These included;
Jewish, Baptist, Lutheran and many more!
The Gold Era Around Albury (1852+)
In 1852 Richard Heaver , a flour miller,
his wife and James Dennison, a plasterer,
found 26 grains of gold while fossicking in
the region of Darkies' Hill  (Black  Range)
in the Albury area.  It attracted 150 people,
including Mr Townsend, the resident surveyor.
It was probably six years after that before
payable gold was founded.
Street Names
Most streets in Albury are named
after famous people. For example,
Englehardt Street honours Charles
Englehardt. The City of Albury has
over 600 street names.  The first
were chosen by Thomas Townsend
when he laid out a plan for this town
to be called Albury.
