The History of
the Olympic Torch.
[ It's coming to Albury.]

The details of many past events are not clear because they happened so long ago when written records were not always kept in great detail.  People often relied on word-of-mouth to pass on information over generations.  The history of the OLYMPIC TORCH is a story that has lost some detail for these reasons.

"Why are we at Albury Public School interested in the history of the Olympic Torch?"
(you might ask....)

Well, here's the answer.....The Olympic Torch is going to be run through the streets of Albury on its way to the 2000 Sydney Olympics, and we're all going to be there to see it.

These are the facts that we know.......

In the year 2000 the first town in N.S.W. that the Torch is coming to, will be Albury. Albury's own Olympic swimmers Jacinta Van Lint and Clementine Stoney will be swimming for the Australian team. We wish them luck!

The Olympic Torch was first used at the Modern Olympic Games, 1928 in Amsterdam in the Netherlands. The popular town relay would take the sacred Olympic flame into Olympia to entertain a city waiting for the Olympic Games to begin. In the Temple of Zeus, the sacred flame started burning. The second appearance of the Olympic Torch in 1936 was in Berlin. It was in Berlin that the torch relay was introduced.

Before the start of each Olympic Games, the Olympic Torch is first lit at Olympia, the site of the Ancient Olympics. It is then carried by many runners to the Host City. This could be similar to a long relay race through different countries of the world.
