TRANSPORT TRENDS Throughout Albury's History!
Albury's transport throughout the history.
Albury in 1919 had no public
transport at all, except for railways.
Most working people walked or
cycled to work, though some
professionals had cars or horses.
Albury's first traffic lights, at the Dean and Kiewa
streets intersections were installed in 1976, and
the second was a set at Olive street in 1968.
Albury's first paddle steamer arrived in
1855 on the 2nd of October.
The "Cumberoona" was built in 1866. It offered first class accommodation, a
stewardess and separate cabin for ladies. The NSW railway, in 1881 gave the
town another boost. The two railways strengthened primary industry
throughout the Border District. The Municipal Waterworks at Mungabareena
opened in 1866, using coal-fired steam engines to pump water to a reservoir
on Eastern Hill. Albury provided it's own Fire Brigade in 1863, with a fire
engine, worked by 14 men.
