Entertainment in Albury
(1927)

The classical style Cinema Centre was built as the Regent Theatre for a Lebanese migrant , Betro Abikhair [or Abicare], in Albury (1926-1927). This was Louis Harrison's great achievement in Albury.  Using metropolitan designs, he produced a plan with the help of Alan Bogle, and J.G. Taylor was the contractor.

A first -night reviewer called the Regent a "fascinating
temple to the Gods and Goddesses of stage and film".
The Hollywood atmosphere came from a magnificent
Adam-style interior with ivory cameos and plaques, and
a foyer adorned with marble and Queensland maple.
The original theatre had 650 seats in the dress circle,
the two front rows being luxurious gold-coloured
tip-up armchairs, the rest in blue , and 830 seats
in the stalls .Every seat was filled when Nellie Melba gave
a farewell concert there in July, 1927.
